Ashley Buchanan
Council Member
Dr. Buchanan is an Associate Professor at The University of
Rhode Island (URI) College of Pharmacy and an Adjunct
Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the Brown University
School of Public Health. She earned her Doctor of Public
Health in Biostatistics from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015 and completed postdoctoral
training in biostatistics and epidemiology at the Harvard
T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Since joining URI in
2016, she has built a research program at the intersection
of HIV prevention and substance use disorders. Her work
develops causal inference methods for evaluating spillover
effects of public health interventions in network settings,
particularly among marginalized populations. Dr. Buchanan
leads URI’s Networks and Causal Inference for Public Health
and Education Research (NCIPHER) Lab and was the first
biostatistician to receive an NIH National Institute on Drug
Abuse (NIDA) Avenir Award. She currently serves as principal
investigator of an NIH NIDA R01 focused on developing causal
inference methods to assess spillover effects of HIV
prevention interventions. Dr. Buchanan has demonstrated
leadership skills in setting up and sustaining her lab at
URI and in her leadership of several high impact, high
budget NIH grant. She is eager to contribute to our
profession in a leadership role, and this seems like a
win-win opportunity for NESS and for Dr. Buchanan herself. I
am quite sure you will be happy to have her on the Council.
