Dr. Zhen (James) Xiao is the Director of Biostatistics at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, leading statistical strategy for cell and device therapy in Type 1 diabetes. Before joining Vertex, he served as a Biostatistics Group Lead at Agios Pharmaceuticals, overseeing statistical support for multiple rare disease programs across all clinical development phases. Before that, he was Associate Director of Biostatistics at Biogen, contributing to multiple clinical and medical affairs programs in Neurology and Ophthalmology. Dr. Xiao has played a key role in bringing innovative treatments to patients with serious unmet medical needs. He actively promoted and exercised statistical innovations in clinical development, leading research initiatives on missing data, Phase 3 dose finding, and sample size re-estimation. His research interests primarily focus on missing data methodologies and Bayesian approaches in clinical trial design and statistical inference. Dr. Xiao earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Riverside, and B.S. in Mathematics from University of Science and Technology of China.
