Yasuo Amemiya
Council Member (2017 – 2020)
Yasuo Amemiya is Principal Research Staff Member and Head, Statistical Analysis & Forecasting at IBM Thomas. J. Watson
Research Center. His previous IBM positions were Manager, Statistical Analysis & Forecasting, and Research Staff
Member. In addition to managing a statistics research group, his work at IBM has focused on statistical solution development
for business metric forecasting, physical system management, marketing impact analysis, enterprise decision support system,
and workforce management. Prior to joining IBM, Amemiya was Professor of Statistics at Iowa State University. There, he
served as the thesis advisor for 12 Ph.D. graduates in statistics. His research at Iowa State included collaboration with
on-campus research centers and institutes in prevention science, social/behavioral research, agricultural economics, plant
science, dairy science, and family studies. Amemiya is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He served as one of
the founding member of the NESS Council for 2017–18, focusing on industry–academia interaction and graduate student career
development. He has also served as the administrator of IBM Student Research Awards, one of the primary student awards of
the NESS.
